Recycled tires help keep children safe
Playground safety mats, featured above, made from recycled tires have been installed at all of the parks in the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation park system thanks to a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Solid Waste Management Program.
"These mats make playgrounds safer because of their ability to absorb shock without injuring the child," said Parks and Recreation Director Katie Noyd. The Solid Waste Management Program, awards the grants through the Scrap Tire Surface Material Grant and Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation was awarded $4,747 to purchase 78 rubber mats to place under slides and swing sets in 9 parks throughout Excelsior Springs. These grants are funded by a 50 cent fee for purchase of new tires; the program works to protect and improve the environment by developing a scrap tire management system that creates economic incentives for the proper management of scrap tires in Missouri.
Several school and park departments throughout Missouri already use playground rubber safety mats. In the Excelsior Springs playgrounds, the mats are installed in addition to ADA mulch underneath all playgrounds and swing sets.
